恭喜發財 (gung hay fat choy!)
新年快樂 (sun neen fai lok!)
It’s the kickoff for Lunar New Year in Disneyland and we can’t wait to see what this year’s celebration has in store! 🧧🐲
There has been a lot of chatter about #representASIAN within the Disney community and we thought we would highlight tidbits of our own #AsianStory throughout the festival season! So here goes, it’s story time!
We are 3rd/4th generation Chinese-Americans! For our family, one of the most difficult traditions to hold on to and pass on has been language. We only speak English at home and even with our grandparents. However, we were fortunate enough to attend a Chinese immersion elementary school which means 50-90% of our entire school day was taught in Cantonese! We can still read, write and speak some phrases to this day and have names given to us by our grandmother. Between dialect differences within our family and lack of practice/exposure, our familiarity with the language has definitely declined over the years. We didn’t retain as much as would be hoped but we grew up immersed in the culture of our people and this has been a huge part of our identity.
